Fear of Falling – How to Overcome Falling Fears With Hypnosis

By | August 16, 2016

Human beings naturally have a fear of falling. We are afraid that we are going to lose our balance and hurt ourselves. Some degree of anxiety about falling is beneficial because it encourages us to be careful when we are walking on uneven terrain or when we are up on heights that are well above ground level. However, when the usual caution turns to panic and a phobia of falling develops, it can significantly limit a person’s daily activities and quality of life. Therefore, it should be addressed through a technique such as hypnosis so that the person can get back to enjoying life without undue anxiety about taking a fall.

Why Do People Have a Fear of Falling?

Often, anxiety about taking a fall begins in childhood. Young children are often not very stable on their feet and they run around without paying careful attention to their environment. Thus, most of them end up taking a rather significant fall during their early years. If the fall was bad enough then the pain of getting hurt remains with them. Also, if the fall took place at an embarrassing time then the embarrassment stays with them also and may make them fearful about repeating the traumatic event. For some children the fear turns into healthy caution and for others it develops into a phobia.

Senior Citizens

Senior citizens have understandable anxiety about falling since a serious fall can often lead to disability or death. However, it is for these reasons that it is especially important for senior citizens to control their fear of falling. If senior citizens can lessen their panic and control their fear then they may be less likely to fall.

If a person has a phobia of falling then he or she is less likely to leave home and get the requisite physical activity that is necessary to maintain stability and balance and to prevent falls. Also, if the potential for a fall panics a person then that person might walk too carefully and the anxiety might become a self fulfilling prophecy.

There Are No Drugs Nor Surgeries Available to Overcome the Panic

There are no drugs that have proven to be effective in lessening a person’s concern about taking a fall. Likewise, there are no known surgeries that can help a person relax and overcome his or her anxiety.

The Answer is in the Mind

Just because there is not a medical solution to this problem does not mean that there is no solution to the problem. Many people find a cure to their phobia through a technique called self hypnosis.

Self hypnosis

Self hypnosis allows a person to feel stable and balanced. You can train your mind to keep your body balanced and secure so that you do not take any unnecessary falls. The confidence that you gain with this approach will allow you to do things that you never imagined possible. You will be able to hike to the top of the mountain or to go ice skating without the fear of falling and that can be liberating.
